From the kitchen window, Daniel had been enjoying the sight of the sunrise. Now, his vision blurred. He blinked, certain his eyes were deceiving him. The familiar silhouette of his truck was gone.

A strange buzzing filled his ears, a static hum that drowned out the chirping birds. He slammed his fist on the countertop, a reflexive action that did nothing to alleviate the growing pressure in his chest. His breathing became erratic, punctuated by shallow gasps.

He felt a sudden need to check the locks. As if, somehow, the car theft was his fault.
