He’d been anticipating this morning all week. The drive to the coast, the sun on his face, the open road… It all evaporated in a moment. He walked down the steps, a smile already forming, only to freeze.

A wave of heat surged through him, making his palms sweat. His breath hitched in his throat. He felt lightheaded, as if the ground beneath him was tilting. He swayed slightly, grasping at the porch railing for support.

His carefully crafted plans, shattered. He felt...unmoored.
