"And then, you know, he just… confessed!" Ben’s voice boomed across the crowded pub, gesturing dramatically. He was recounting the time they’d both tried out for the school play. He described a climactic moment where the lead actor admitted he'd been faking his audition.

Sarah, seated across from him, felt a sudden chill, as if someone had poured ice water down her back. Her memory of that audition was entirely different. She remembered Ben's audition, which hadn't gone well. She remembered being offered the lead role, and the joy she felt. She remembered the jealousy. As Ben talked on, she kept her eyes on her pint, suddenly finding the head of foam intensely interesting. The room began to spin. How could he possibly be making this up? How could he have forgotten?
