The silence in the car was deafening. After the announcement, it was a quiet drive home. Anna stared out the window, the familiar scenery of her neighborhood appearing foreign and detached. Her jaw ached from clenching her teeth. The music on the radio, usually a comforting backdrop, now grated on her nerves, each note a painful reminder of her disappointment. She felt a strange buzzing in her ears, a high-pitched whine that seemed to amplify the hollowness inside her. She pressed her forehead against the cool glass, hoping the sensation would help ground her.
