He’d known, of course, that the company was trying to attract younger talent. But seeing the figure, the actual dollar amount printed right there on the company intranet, was a different matter entirely. John's jaw clenched. His face felt strangely hot. It was a physical assault. He felt as if someone had punched him in the gut.

His hands, usually steady and precise on the keyboard, fumbled as he attempted to continue working. The words on the screen seemed to swim. He found himself hitting the delete key repeatedly, erasing hours of effort. He had to stand.

He stood and walked around the office, the fluorescent lights of the office seeming extra harsh today, a strange buzzing filling his ears. He needed a break, he told himself.
