Gemotions

Eliza dropped her grocery bags, apples tumbling across the polished wooden floor. Her boyfriend, Ben, was on the couch, laptop open, headphones on. He was listening to something that sounded vaguely familiar, a lilting melody. She assumed it was another one of his obscure indie bands. Then, the music stopped.

Ben turned towards her, smiling. “Hey, honey,” he said. He took off his headphones and continued, “*Cymraeg yn wych, dwi'n hoffi dysgu*.” He waited for her reaction.

Eliza took a step back. She ran a hand through her hair, her fingers tangling in the strands. Her jaw hung slightly open. Welsh? He'd been learning Welsh? She couldn't get her mind to wrap around the idea. He’d never mentioned it. She wondered if she should sit down.
