The crisp autumn air nipped at Sophia's cheeks as she collected her mail. A crisp, yellow card tucked among the usual bills stood out. Her breath caught in her throat. She had told no one her birthday this year, not even her closest friends. She felt a sudden, almost overwhelming urge to flee.

She retreated to her apartment, the card burning a hole in her hand. Her mind was a whirlpool of questions. She ripped open the card. Inside, a single, elegant sentence: “Wishing you a wonderful day.” She pressed a hand to her forehead, feeling a cold sweat break out. She didn't feel wonderful.
