“Oh, what a lovely day!” Beatrice chirped, as she unlocked her mailbox. Then, the card. A deep crimson, with a gold ribbon. It felt opulent, out of place in her simple, quiet life. Her cheerful tone evaporated. A cold wave rolled over her. She knew no one who would send her something like this.

Inside, the message was equally extravagant: “May your day be filled with joy.” She closed the door and turned the lock, a shiver running through her. She clutched the card. She felt like a character in a bad play, trapped in a role she didn't want. Her fingers felt numb.
