The dog barked, drawing Liam's attention to the mail. He picked it up. He saw the card, a black and white image of a single rose. He paused. He hadn’t felt this unsettled in years. His brow furrowed. He felt his hands go cold.

He sat down on the front step, the card heavy in his hands. He opened it slowly. Inside, a simple sentence: "Thinking of you." He knew no one who would send him a card like this, anonymously. He felt a sudden, almost overpowering sense of vulnerability. He stood up abruptly, and went back inside.
