He’d always loved old houses. This one, with its creaky floors and uneven walls, had been a dream come true. Now, standing before the disguised door behind the bookcase, his stomach twisted. It had taken him an hour to realize the bookcase swung outward. A cold sweat slicked his palms. "What the hell…?" he muttered, the words catching in his throat.

The air inside the hidden room was stagnant, thick with the scent of dust and something else, something indefinable that prickled at the back of his neck. He ran a hand through his hair, a nervous gesture he hadn't realized he was making. Sunlight, streaming through a crack in the boarded-up window, barely illuminated the space.
