The air grew icy in the attic. Eliza shivered, though the late summer heat should have been stifling. The loose floorboard, which she’d been meaning to fix, suddenly gave way, revealing a rectangular abyss. She stared at it, her eyes wide. Her mouth opened, but no sound came out.

Dust motes danced in the lone ray of sunlight, illuminating something. A stack of old journals. She felt a jolt, a strange fizzing sensation in her chest. She reached for one and saw the gold embossed words. Her name.
