He’d claimed a last-minute business trip, but here he was, across the crowded art gallery, arm-in-arm with another woman. My jaw dropped. The gallery lights blurred, and the artwork on the walls seemed to swirl. My feet were planted firmly on the ground, yet the floor shifted beneath me. The man, John, turned and saw me, his face losing its color. His eyes widened, and he momentarily froze. His companion followed his gaze and, upon seeing me, stopped smiling. Her hand came away from his arm. The entire room seemed to shrink.
