The air crackled with a strange energy, the lawyer's words hanging in the air like a phantom. Mark felt his heart hammering against his ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the silence. His sister, Jessica, let out a strangled gasp, her eyes darting around the room, as if searching for an escape route.

He pictured the creaking floors, the musty smell of old books, the ghosts of memories that lingered in every corner of the house. He felt the blood drain from his face, leaving him cold and empty.

He wanted to ask, "Why us?". But the words wouldn't come. He could only stare at the lawyer, waiting for him to contradict himself, to reveal it was all a mistake.
