Rain lashed against the overflowing gutter as Elias fumbled with the discarded wallet. He’d found it wedged between the overflowing bins behind the bakery. His fingers, numb with cold, traced the embossed leather. It felt… expensive. He opened it, his breath catching in his throat. Bundles of crisp, unfamiliar bills stared back at him. His heart hammered a frantic tattoo against his ribs. He slammed the wallet shut and looked around, as if expecting someone to appear and reclaim it.
