He found the invitation tucked between bills, a splash of color in a sea of monotony. Daniel stared at the embossed gold lettering. His heart did a funny little flip-flop. The date was circled in red.

He dropped the mail onto the table, the papers scattering like startled birds. A cold sweat slicked his palms. He felt a need to sit, and promptly did, pulling the chair closer. The memories, usually dormant, began to stir, unpleasant currents in the calm waters of his present life.

He hadn't been back to his hometown since graduation. He wasn't sure he could. He reached for a glass of water, his hand trembling so badly that the liquid sloshed over the rim.
