The invitation had arrived by courier, a thick, expensive card with a hand-delivered feel. Mark stared at it, the paper almost glowing. He had a sudden, violent impulse to rip it to shreds.

His breath quickened. He felt the familiar, unwelcome thrum of anxiety. It had been decades since he’d thought about those days. It was just a reminder of who he used to be.

He stood up and walked to the window, staring out at the cityscape. He felt exposed, vulnerable. Everything seemed to shift, to blur. The city was a different place, but the feelings… those were all still there.
