The world tilted. Evelyn felt a rush of nausea, a sudden and profound disorientation. The emerald ring, her mother’s ring, was to be listed online. It had always been hers, in her mind, to inherit.

Her aunt’s voice droned on about needing the money, about unforeseen expenses. Evelyn gripped the edge of the kitchen table, her knuckles white. The bright sunlight streaming through the window seemed to intensify, making her blink rapidly.

She tried to speak, to form a coherent question, but the words caught in her throat. All that came out was a strangled gasp, a sound of utter incredulity.
