He found the official letter crumpled on the kitchen counter, discarded amidst a pile of bills. He scanned the terse sentences. Demolition permit approved. Effective date: next month. His vision blurred, and he had to sit down immediately.

He felt a sudden, profound emptiness in his chest, a vacuum where his heart usually resided. He ran a hand through his hair, tugging at the strands, not fully aware of what he was doing. His gaze drifted to the chipped paint on the wall, the same paint that his sister had meticulously chosen, a vibrant teal, years ago.

"No," he whispered, the sound barely audible. The word felt inadequate, a tiny pebble against a tidal wave. He wanted to scream, to lash out, to somehow stop the inevitable. He wanted to turn back the clock.

The letter slipped from his fingers. The floorboards creaked under his weight as he slowly rose, the house seeming to shift and sway around him. He felt like he was watching his life fade before his eyes.
