The news arrived in a phone call, a cheerful voice explaining the details of the impending development. He hung up, his hand still gripping the phone tightly. He felt as if the air had been sucked from the room.

He walked to the window and stared out at the street. His childhood home was visible from here, a familiar silhouette against the setting sun. He wanted to go there, to see it one last time, to touch the walls, to feel the echoes of his past.
