"A casino night?" Daniel muttered to himself, the invitation clutched in his hand. It was the same date as his planned murder mystery dinner party, an event he’d spent weeks preparing for. A wave of dizziness washed over him.

He felt a sudden, profound sense of isolation. He had worked so hard, and now this. He was sure everyone would prefer the glamour of the casino, the thrill of gambling.

He sat down heavily, the invitation slipping from his numb fingers. He stared out the window, his mind a jumble of thoughts. The world seemed to tilt on its axis. He felt a hollowness in his chest, a deep and echoing emptiness.
