The email arrived like a sudden downpour, splattering across her screen. She blinked, rereading the subject line: “Important Announcement Regarding Company Future.” Her breath hitched. Her coffee, moments ago a comforting warmth, suddenly felt cold. The room seemed to tilt, the familiar beige of her cubicle walls morphing into a dizzying kaleidoscope of color. She reached for the chair's armrest, her knuckles white.

She scrolled down, the words blurring before her eyes. “Acquisition… new direction… synergies.” Nonsense. It was all nonsense. Her meticulously organized desk, the photos of her dog, the framed motivational poster – all now felt like props in a play she didn't want to be in. The sudden tightness in her chest made it difficult to breathe. She closed her eyes, imagining the inevitable uncertainty that lay ahead.

The silence of the office amplified the frantic thrumming in her ears. Everyone else seemed to be carrying on as usual, oblivious to the world shifting beneath their feet. Was she the only one who felt like she'd just stepped into a different dimension? She gripped her desk hard.
