He stared at the screen, mouth agape. The cursor blinked mockingly, as if it were enjoying his current state of… well, of *whatever* this was. He felt a strange disconnect from his own body, as if he were an observer watching a movie about his life. The room spun slightly.

The words "merger" and "restructuring" echoed in his mind, each syllable a punch to the gut. The comfortable familiarity of his office, with its well-worn desk and cluttered bookshelves, now felt foreign, alien. He ran a hand through his hair, tugging at the strands.

He considered getting up, but his legs felt like lead. He felt trapped, pinned to his chair, forced to witness the demolition of everything he had known for the past decade. He closed his eyes, his breath hitching.
