The metallic clang of the elevator's failure echoed in Michael's ears, reverberating through his bones. He was normally unflappable, the calm in any storm. But this… this was different. He pressed the emergency button repeatedly, the red light mocking him. No response.

He found himself shaking his head, a gesture of disbelief. He crossed his arms, the gesture feeling inadequate. The small space seemed to shrink, closing in on him. He felt disconnected, detached from reality.

He heard his coworker, Susan, start talking, but her words were like a foreign language. He couldn't process them. He just kept staring at the floor, wanting to sink into it, disappear. He ran his hand through his hair, his fingers tangling in the strands. This was absurd.
