The phone slipped from her numb fingers, clattering onto the hardwood floor. Sarah’s words, a casual mention of a new life in Miami, echoed in her head, a cruel and persistent hum. She stared blankly at the ceiling, the floral pattern blurring into meaningless shapes. She felt a profound emptiness, a void opening up in the center of her chest.

Her entire body felt heavy, as if gravity had suddenly intensified. She couldn’t seem to move.
