Gemotions

The letter arrived during a particularly sunny afternoon. Sunlight streamed through the window, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air. Clara blinked, the brightness momentarily blinding her as she opened the envelope. She was reading the words when her legs gave way, and she slumped onto the couch.

Her heart pounded against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the silence of the room. A chill ran down her spine, and she wrapped her arms around herself, as if seeking warmth. She couldn't tear her gaze away from the neatly penned lines. Her eyes, normally sharp, were glazed over, and for a moment, the world around her faded to grey.
