The worn cardboard box sat in the attic, gathering dust. Inside, tucked away with old photographs and faded trinkets, was the letter. Daniel had come to retrieve an old family heirloom and stumbled upon it. His fingers froze when he saw the return address.

He pulled the letter out slowly, the paper brittle and yellowed with age. His breath caught in his throat. He sat on the dusty floor, rereading the words again and again. A knot formed in his stomach. The attic, usually a place of comfort, suddenly felt cold and oppressive.
