"Grandma, are you sure?" Sarah's voice was barely a whisper. Her grandmother, frail but resolute, met her gaze with unwavering blue eyes. "Yes, dear. Your mother had a half-brother. I didn't think it was my place to say anything. He's called Thomas." The information hung in the air, heavy and dense. Sarah felt as though the floor beneath her feet had shifted, tilting precariously. Her stomach churned. The afternoon sun, streaming through the window, seemed to mock her with its normalcy. She looked at her grandmother, searching for some clue, some hint of the truth she hadn't known.
