She'd been tracing her family tree online, a hobby she’d enjoyed for years. Then, it appeared – a branch, a name, a child she’d never known about. Her fingers froze on the mouse. Her heart began to pound against her ribs, a frantic rhythm. She leaned closer to the screen, squinting at the details. Her mother, always a figure of mystery, had carried a secret. The familiar comfort of her computer room dissolved, replaced by a disorienting sensation of being adrift. The air in the room felt suddenly thin, as if she were at a great height.
