“Fifty-seven thousand dollars.” The words slipped from my lips in a whisper. My hands trembled, and I dropped the bank statement onto the counter. My head spun. The room was spinning. My husband, Robert, had lied. He’d told me they were barely scraping by.

The air in the kitchen felt thick and heavy, like a suffocating blanket. I could almost hear the sound of his laughter, his teasing voice. The truth, revealed on the white paper, cut into me. I felt the cold spreading through me. I didn't know what to think, or what to say.
