The bank statement felt like a brick in Alex’s hand. He sat down heavily, the breath leaving his body in a whoosh. His wife, Katherine, had a secret account, and the balance was eye-watering. The walls of their bedroom seemed to close in. He felt a cold sweat break out on his forehead.

He thought of the small talk, the little jokes, the shared history. All of it felt polluted now, tainted. The world around him seemed to lose its color, to become a dull, gray monochrome. He needed to get out.
