The contents of the letter lay scattered on the kitchen table. David’s eyes darted across the words again and again, unable to fully absorb them. Mrs. Gable, his neighbor, had left him a sizable inheritance. Enough to… well, enough to change everything.

He’d always thought she was struggling, living on a fixed income, clipping coupons. The image of her tiny, cluttered apartment, the worn furniture, the patched curtains, flashed through his mind. Had it all been a clever facade?

He felt a prickling sensation on the back of his neck. This was… unexpected. Utterly, completely unexpected. He stumbled back, pushing the chair away with a clatter. He felt like he was falling, even though he was standing still.
