The pleasantries ended abruptly. "The magnolia… it's blocking our light." The words, delivered with a forced smile, were a sentence of destruction. A chill ran down her spine.

She felt a strange disconnect, as if she were observing the scene from a distance. The world seemed to sharpen, the colors becoming more vivid, almost unreal. The delicate scent of the magnolia blossoms, usually a source of joy, now felt cloying.

She found herself unable to speak, her throat constricted by a sudden wave of panic. She could only stare at the tree, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs.
