The casualness with which Mr. Davis made the request was almost insulting. As though she, Emily, wouldn’t have a problem with him completely changing the look and feel of her property. *Her* property. She felt a sudden, sharp intake of breath.

Her posture stiffened, her shoulders rising up towards her ears. She felt a hot flush creep up her neck, staining her cheeks. She was not prepared for this. Not even remotely.

She crossed her arms, a shield against the unexpected. Her lips pressed together in a thin, tight line. “I… I need a moment to consider that,” she finally stated, her voice tight and clipped.
