He’d always been a man of science, my father. Then, he started quoting scriptures. The change hit me like a physical blow. I watched him across the dinner table, the familiar lines of his face rearranged by a strange, new serenity.

I couldn't quite meet his eyes. His words felt hollow to me, disconnected from the man I knew. I pushed the food around my plate, my appetite vanishing. The air in the room felt thick and heavy.

I listened to him describe his newfound faith, but the words seemed to bounce off me, failing to penetrate the icy barrier that had grown within me. I felt a sudden, inexplicable sense of loss.

When he looked at me, I quickly looked away. I needed to escape, to be alone, to process this. I found myself walking away from the house, heading towards the open field.
