He stared at the cover, his jaw tight. "Elias Thorne: The Accidental Architect." The title seemed to mock him. He’d built his life brick by painstaking brick, and now, apparently, someone else had decided to blueprint it. He'd never spoken to the author, never granted an interview.

He tossed the book onto the coffee table. The glossy image on the cover – a photo he hadn’t taken and certainly wouldn’t have chosen – felt like an invasion. His hands unconsciously fidgeted with the edge of his t-shirt. He scoffed, grabbing a glass of water, and then stared blankly out the window.

A cold draft seemed to seep into the room. He felt a need to check the locks on his doors. Someone knew too much, somehow. He decided he would need to start from the beginning to understand what was going on.
