David stood frozen in front of the display case. The ring, its delicate design catching the light, was eerily familiar. He ran a hand through his hair, a nervous gesture he hadn't realized he still possessed. It was a long shot, a ridiculously unlikely scenario.

He approached the counter. The shop owner, a young woman with multiple piercings, was engrossed in her phone. David cleared his throat.

"That ring... the one with the sapphires…" he began. He felt a profound sense of unease. He wanted this to be a coincidence. He wished it was anything but what it looked like.
