The words on the screen blurred. “Insufficient funding,” the email stated. “Other candidates more deserving.” Sarah closed her laptop with a snap. She paced her small room, the wood floors groaning under her weight. How could they say she wasn't deserving? She’d written, rewritten, and perfected her essays, highlighting her unique skills and experiences. She’d spent countless hours working to put herself in the best possible position. She stopped at the window, staring out at the rain-streaked glass. She pinched the bridge of her nose, a dull ache beginning to throb behind her eyes.
