"Unsuccessful," the email read. Ethan let out a short, sharp laugh. He'd expected it, of course. He understood the odds. Still, the casual dismissal stung. He’d envisioned himself at the university, already picking his classes, imagining the life he'd be able to build. He ran a hand through his hair, dislodging a few stray strands. He leaned forward, elbows on his knees, staring at the screen. He knew, deep down, that this was just a hurdle. He just couldn't shake the feeling that something was being left unsaid.
