Eliza smoothed her skirt, feeling the fabric tug slightly. The new guy, Ben, was leaning against the doorway, all smiles and enthusiasm. I had worked here for ten years, through layoffs, reorganizations, and a general lack of appreciation. Now, the company, in their infinite wisdom, wanted me to “integrate” him.

“Okay, Ben, let’s go over the filing system,” I said, my voice betraying none of my inner turmoil. I opened the cabinet, meticulously pulling out files, each one a testament to my dedication. I moved slowly, as if the task required extreme focus.

Ben, eager as a puppy, took notes. I deliberately mentioned outdated procedures, the ones that were a complete waste of time. I wanted him to fail.

The office felt stifling.
