The bitter taste of coffee did nothing to soothe David’s mounting irritation. He scanned the terminal, his eyes narrowed. "Delayed." The word appeared on the screen, a digital slap in the face. His new job interview. He had pinned all his hopes on this role. He was almost certain this was not random chance.

He leaned against a wall, crossing his arms. The polite apologies from the airline staff held no weight. He didn’t buy into the notion of uncontrollable circumstances, or bad luck. He found it too easy to believe in incompetence.

He knew what they would say to him when he finally arrived. Excuses. He would hear excuses. He would be expected to simply accept.
