The professor’s words echoed in Ethan’s ears, each syllable a hammer blow. He sat frozen in place, the implication of the accusation slowly sinking in. He ran a hand over his face. The heat rose in his cheeks.

He recalled working on the paper, the late nights, the countless revisions. He’d been incredibly diligent, striving to make sure everything was perfect. The idea that this could have happened… it just didn’t add up.

He closed his eyes for a moment, trying to regain his composure. He opened his mouth, but nothing came out at first. Finally, he spoke, his voice hoarse. “I don't understand,” he said.
