He took a large gulp of his beer, the bubbles barely registering on his tongue. The church was already filled with guests, all smiles and well wishes. David felt a tremor run through him, a feeling like the earth had shifted slightly beneath his feet. He knew this would happen eventually, but the anticipation had been worse than the reality. He glanced around, pretending to study the ornate stained-glass windows.

The officiant began the ceremony, and David focused intently on the vows, trying to ignore the nervous thrum in his ears. He wasn't sure what he expected. Maybe a dramatic reveal? Maybe nothing at all? His breath caught; he saw her, standing near the back, looking perfectly composed. A wave of ice crashed over him, a cold sensation that settled in his stomach. He returned to watching the couple, trying to appear nonchalant.
