"So, the medical conference was productive?" Maria asked, trying to sound casual, as she stirred sugar into her coffee. John had been telling her about the latest developments in cardiology for the past week, explaining that he worked as a doctor.

John nodded vigorously. "Absolutely! Learned so much." He was wearing a new, expensive watch.

Maria had known John since they were kids. She had always found him funny, and he had always been a liar. His stories about the exotic destinations he visited, the expensive cars he drove, and the luxurious hotels he stayed in never quite added up. She had never said anything, but she was not so sure anymore. She felt a tickle in her eye. She was not sure what to believe.
