Rain lashed against the windows, mirroring the storm brewing inside David. He’d overheard Sarah’s phone calls for months, snippets of conversations laced with laughter he hadn’t heard directed at him in years. The way she’d flinch if he walked into a room during one… it was unsettling, to say the least.

He pretended to work, but his mind was elsewhere, replaying her carefully constructed excuses. She’d explained away the late-night chats with talk of “book club” and “family.” Now, every time she offered an explanation, a cold feeling settled in his chest.

The phone sat on the kitchen table, charging. David found himself drawn to it, his fingers itching to swipe through the call log, even though he knew it would be a betrayal. He ran a hand through his hair, the unease a palpable presence in the air.
