The constant buzzing of the phone vibrated in Chloe's pocket. It had been like this for weeks. She knew the pattern now: a quick glance at the caller ID, a rushed answer, and then a hushed conversation away from her. The phone calls had started after his trip to Vegas.

He kept claiming they were all about work. James worked in sales, after all. But his behavior was inconsistent. The lies were always small ones, easy to overlook. The way he kept his phone from her view, though, was another story.

She had peeked at his messages on the computer, but found nothing concrete. Still, the feeling remained, a persistent itch at the back of her brain.
