The aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the kitchen, but it didn't ease the discomfort that gnawed at Iris. Daniel had been taking secret phone calls for weeks, always disappearing into the guest bedroom, closing the door behind him.

She had questioned him, of course, but his explanations were always the same: “business,” “work.” His eyes, however, seemed to avoid hers. The phone, a simple object, had become a wall between them.

She glanced at the phone, sitting on the counter. His, of course. She picked it up, her fingers trembling. As she scrolled through the call log, she felt a profound sense of dread.
