The clinic was modern, all sleek lines and glass. The nurse gave him a sympathetic smile. "A simple mistake," she said, her voice gentle, "it happens." Michael, however, didn't share her calmness. He felt a creeping unease, a sense of something hidden.

The doctor, a young man who looked too fresh from med school, confirmed the mix-up. They’d provided him with the wrong information. He apologized profusely, assuring him it was all being corrected. Michael wasn't feeling reassured.

He sat there, silently. The doctor’s words felt like they were missing something. He had a strange, unsettled feeling in his gut. The whole thing felt too convenient. He would have to go over the files himself.
