"Congratulations on the move to Project Management, Michael!" His supervisor's words rang hollow. Michael felt the words echo in the emptiness of his own feelings. A sinking feeling had begun in his gut the moment he read the notification.

He'd been content in research, the lone wolf navigating the labyrinth of information. He found comfort in the details, in the slow, steady accumulation of knowledge. Project Management, however, meant teamwork, deadlines, pressure. He was not a team person, and the thought of deadlines made his breath catch in his throat.

He picked up the phone to call his friend. He could imagine the conversation. The obligatory questions, the forced optimism. He didn't want to talk about it. He wanted to cancel the whole thing.
