He had been acting strange for weeks. A forced cheerfulness, a constant phone glued to his ear, and then today, the final straw. He’d left a sticky note on the bathroom mirror, written in what she quickly recognized as Gaelic. Her breath hitched. She had spent years trying to teach him her family's language, but he never put in the effort.

She found him in the living room, listening to music on his headphones. The music was some Scottish folk stuff, of course. He was tapping his foot, a faraway look in his eyes. He didn’t notice her. She wanted to scream. She gripped the edge of the door frame, her knuckles white. Why couldn’t he just be honest?
