"Quaint!" The word echoed mockingly in Daniel’s mind as he surveyed the unfinished basement. He’d spent weeks working on the house. Now, however, he was starting to think that he should have spent his money on a more solid building.

He was investigating a persistent draft, which had led him to a corner of the basement that felt colder than the rest. The air felt colder, and the concrete blocks seemed different. He had checked the blueprints, but they provided no answers.

He had already dismissed the possibility of a hidden room. Preposterous. He was not one for ghost stories or unexplained mysteries. But as he ran his hand along the wall, he found a section of concrete that felt smoother, colder.

He tapped it with his knuckles. It sounded hollow. He took out his hammer, and prepared to investigate. He paused, swallowed, and started to work.
